What To Do Instead: Think Like a Product Developer

Start where production starts - with sourcing. Browse OEM supplier catalogues. Look at what blanks or base silhouettes already exist. Ask: what can I modify? What’s missing that I actually need to design from scratch?

Then - and only then - begin sketching.

When you sketch with supplier constraints in mind, your designs move faster through development. Your tech packs are clearer. Your samples require fewer revisions. You waste less money.

But Don’t I Still Need Sketches?

Yes - 100%. But they should be strategic. Use sketches to brief a tech pack. Use them to communicate a modification to a supplier. Or to visualize a hero product that isn’t available as a base style.
